Optimisation Trends to watchout for in 2017

Optimisation Trends to watchout for in 2017

Hello readers!

We are left with a few days to call 2016 a year, to be precise we have less than 33 days and inbound marketing has taking its foot hold on marketing experience with a lot of focus on search engine optimization (SEO). The question on every one lips will be how has our website performed this year when it comes to the use of SEO? What are the changes we should be expecting in 2017 in regards to optimization? What trends will be the leading factors for website ranking by search engines.

In this article we will look at 6 very sure trends that will take 2017 by storm and why marketers should take them more serious.

1. Mobile Friendliness: This year Google announced that one of their top priority for ranking websites will be their adaptation to mobile screen, thus meaning that any site that isn’t optimized to fit mobile phones, tablets, playbook and any other mobile devices will be ranked less by Google and Bing. Stats put it that most internet user accesses the internet using mobile devices. In other words, those website that doesn’t have mobile responsiveness are losing lots of customers. Website responsiveness to mobile device has been a trend for SEOs this year and will take its place as one of the top decision makers for SERPs ranking next year. So if your website is not yet optimized for mobile devices yet, I suggest you call your website programmer and designer to get it fixed before the year runs out.

2. Content (relevancy, uniqueness and quality) Over Keywords: Keyword research and how to use them has been a major topic this year by SEO sites as well as content marketing but I presume that latter will be a major focus for search engines in 2017. Google to be precise might focus more on content relevancy, uniqueness and quality. It is expected that Google will also be looking out for site that solves searchers answers in one click. However while some of my fellow SEO bloggers believe that Google might prefer short and brief content over lengthy one, I still believe that lengthy contents will still be part of their ranking factors. The main point is Google algorithms will focus on finding unique, relevant and quality content over keywords in 2017.

3. More Focus on AMP: The acronym AMP refers to ‘Accelerated Mobile Pages’ a new Google initiative to help increase page loading on mobile devices. Google launched this back in February 2016 to help assist slow loading devices to pick up speed while loading a page as well as saving data. Throughout this year AMP has been under experimentation and it is expected that by next year Google will make it a major factor in the ranking of website when it comes to mobile adaptation and speed. AMP allows you to craft content which is optimized with a special HTML for mobile devices and posts it thus eliminating the lengthy time it takes a page to load on mobile phones and tablet. You need to take this one very serious because it Google’s own initiative and it is the most used search engine, so play by their rules.

4. Location: Location will be another trend that might dominate search engines and here is why. The world is a big place and many people are not prepared to travel too far just to get the product or services they want, they would prefer something close by. Now for small SMEs it will be an added advantage to reduce your search radius so as to give you an edge in SERPs. Imagine someone in Lagos searching for let’s say a ‘Chinese restaurant’ and the first result that appears on his screen is the one located in Abuja such person will be forced to limit his search to Lagos. With this limit in search radius only those Chinese restaurants in Lagos will appear on the search engine. To solve this issue you need to optimize your website by adding location to it so people can easily find you. Google also understand the importance that is why their search algorithm produces result first base on the location the query is coming from before suggesting others that are located around that location. The auto suggests feature also assist and makes location based searches easy.

5. Visuals: The use of visuals, which is pictures and videos, has come to stay and will be more rampant in 2017. Those who use videos and pictures for their digital marketing campaigns get more clicks and customers than those who ignore their use. However creativity is all that matters when using visuals. People wants that unusual style that still sends the right message, something different from the everyday kind of marketing or adverts. It could be your pictures or video presentation or the method by which you choose to disperse information such as using infographics or so. Get creative.

6. Social Media: We cannot deny this, social media platform as played a great role in building leads for marketers since the came on board. The social world through the internet has come to stay and they will play a major role in search engine ranking factors. This year stats put it that social media was visible in the ranking of website by search engines and assurance is that in 2017 these search engines will take them more seriously. You also have to take your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platform more seriously.

Below are two other trends we need to look out for in 2017.
  • · Voice search taking over: voice search has been showing it face in search engines for quite some time now particularly this year, though stats says it was mostly used by US citizen. It’s a global world and technology is transcending boarders with the speed of light, hence I won’t be surprise if Nigerians and Africans in general adapt this new feature. Optimizing your site for voice search will be an added advantage for you.
  • · Apps over website: this particular trend has been going on for close to 3 years now but people aren’t taking it serious. As 2017 approaches I’m sure that the preference of apps over traditional website will be the trend. I can’t remember when I logged on to Facebook or twitter using their traditional website, even blogs, news agencies banks, and internet malls in Nigeria have adapted to this new trend ‘apps over website.’

In conclusion the six point mentioned above will definitely be a part of SERPs ranking in 2017, but still we can’t exactly predict what we should be expecting from search engines, particularly Google as they continue to develop their algorithms to suit users experience and provide them with valuable and relevant result when the search for a query. At this point I bid you happy SEOing.

But more advanced competitor is not always the greatest threat. It is also necessary to take into account the specifics of the range, the target audience, and prospects.

The most dangerous competitors' analysis will not only help to discover the latest trends in the opponent's work but also borrow his best ideas. That, in turn, will allow to leave it behind.

How to start spying on your competitors

To find all rivals, organic search is not enough. Webmasters often know some of the brightest  competitors, but do not imagine the whole picture.

To get a complete picture of the market is necessary to carry out comprehensive research:
  • identify the key competitors by the level of search engine optimization;
  • conduct a comparative analysis with the closest rivals;
  • identify competitors in the paid search;
  • compare competitors' domains with yours in the context of the PPC strategy development.

After the identification and analysis of the competitive environment, we have to select the most successful rivals. We will improve and adapt their best ideas. Thus, they remain behind.

How to build plan of competitors' analyzing

As we see, quite a lot keywords are similar, but anyway much more of them in all 3 sites are unique. We can see all keywords of our interest clicking on a certain section of the infographic. Expanding our semantics adding by new keywords will allow our potential clients to see us more frequently in the search results, which naturally affects the level of traffic.

How to conduct an in-depth analysis of competitors

If one of the identified competitors is progressing too fast, you need to explore it for more details. For this purpose, we monitor competitor's positions to determine his strengths and weaknesses.

First, we collect the semantics of our own site. It is required for further analysis. After, we go to the List of Projects page and create a new project. To do this we add competitor's domain address and its name.

Click Start Tracking (positions) button. Set up monitoring:
  1. choose the region;
  2. add keywords, tags, mark them with tags (to make it easier to analyze their thematic niches);
  3. set up a schedule (daily, every 3 days or a week);
  4. open an access to the positions monitoring to colleagues or employees, if necessary.

Minimum time to wait for the first results - about half an hour.

It is advisable to wait a few days to a week to get the dynamics of competitor's ranking. The results are available in the Positions section.

How to investigate competitors’ PPC strategy, and create an optimal one

Promotion in PPC is one of the critical elements of site ranking in the SERP's top. However, not every SEO efficiently uses advertising budget. It is necessary to analyze several competitors' strategies, to create the most suitable for yourself.

To do this, go to the PPC Research module and select Competitors section.

Analyze keywords your competitors use. Especially interesting are keyword requests that we do not have. They contain large reserves for further progress in the search results.

Similarly to the domains research in SEO-analysis, we compare competitors' domains with our domain in PPC.

Information on the found keywords rivals use in PPC will help build a resistance strategy. To do this, click on the numerical values of unique keywords. We investigate the indicators:

  1. frequency;
  2. cost;
  3. competition in the PPC.

Their ratio makes it possible to calculate the optimal budget for promotion in the PPC, taking into account the specifics of our work.

Summary

We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the competitive market. To do this, we found competitors and examined them from several sides - from the SEO point of view and PPC strategy.

This allowed identifying additional resources for further neutralization of rivals in the search results. They are as follows:

  1. keywords and phrases to expand the semantic core;
  2. promising keywords to which your competitors can't hold on;
  3. keywords that are used for PPC campaigns;
  4. good ideas that are borrowed from the successful competitors.

11 common Search Engine Optimisation Error and their Solutions

11 common Search Engine Optimisation Error and their Solutions

Search engine optimization ‎is something every body wants to get involved in so that their site can rank among top pages of search engines such as Google and Bing. A lot of new comers in the industry pay lots of money and yet asked themselves why they aren't there yet?.  They are not there yet because they aren't aware of some factors or they don't understand these factors correctly. We should also put in mind that SEO changes every day and we need a concentrated follow up on these changes or else we will be lost in the process as what might work today may not work today.

So if you have been spending money on optimizing your site or you are a beginner in search engine optimization, here are several common mistakes you need to be aware of and avoid  with their corrections;
  • 1. Having a wrong optimization mindset: Lots of people in the website industry have a very wrong mindset when it comes to SEO. They believe the method used Yesterday is the same  Today and w‎ill remain Like that forever. I urge you to change this belief as this will destroy your website before you start. Some believe that it is all about:
  • Link building: very wrong mindset. SEO goes beyond Link building. It involves a lot, content, website design, search engines rules and much more.
  • It is done only on the Landing page: This is also a wrong mindset as every page of your website needs to be optimized for search engines. It should be done after you are sure you have address what your users want.
  • SEO is all about Keywords Density: Too many Keywords on a particular page can kill such page opportunity to appear on a search engine as it might be seen as spamming. When doing Keywords use the right keywords, be it a single one but that actually carries a good meaning relating to your business.
  • You are not using Google Keyword tool: Lots of website and blogs ignore the use of Google Keyword tool as they believe that by using the popular keywords related to their industry. Google Keyword tools give you an idea of queries that can be used to find your website and using such keyword will drive traffic to your site. Also, try to avoid popular Keywords as these are over used and the competition on them are usually very high. Try using long tail keywords that are hardly used. For example, instead of using the keyword "SEO" which is a popular keyword for blogs about Search engines, you can go for "Search Engine Optimization" instead.
  • Poor Content: This year Google announced that content plays a major role for a website to rank on their SERP. Publishing good and informative content will help your site rank well on Search Engines. A site with good content attracts traffic. So here are things you should avoid when creating content:
  • ‎Directly copying contents from another Website: This is the first bullet that will kill your effort. Try writing original content and if you are going to use someone else content. There are ways to do this and keep your originality.
  • Providing wrong and irrelevant information: This is you shooting yourself on the leg. Once your site is know for providing wrong info and irrelevant info for that matter then you are done for especially if you are business website. ‎ This will make you have trust issues with search engines and Internet user. Aviod providing wrong info and irrelevant one. There are several niche you can write about that users are interested in, it only requires your commitment.
  • No citation and statistics to back up your claim: when you cite some else work in your research it increases your website trust. Also providing statistics to your claim proves that your site can be trusted and thus will increase your site rank on Search Engine Result Page.
  • Non Unique Title Tags and Description: Having a unique title tag on every page of your website can help increase SERP. Here are several things you should avoid while giving Titles to pages‎:
  • Don't use the same title for all your pages
  • Avoid including your website name for ‎all your pages. ( website name should be for the homepage only)
  • Make the title unique, short and creative. Avoid lengthy title tags for a page‎. 65 characters maximum.
For Description, though Google claims they don't pay attention to it, a good description attracts an audience. Your description should be persuasive, unique and most provide relevant information. It should be between 150 and 160 characters.

  • Slow Loading Website: A website that loads slowly is bad for business. According to Google, website speed is among the factors that decide website ranking on SERP. A slow loading website increases bounce rates meaning that users aren't patient enough to wait a minute for a website to load when it doesn't load in few seconds, they head for an alternative one. Also, put in mind that as you consider your site speed also make sure ‎it mobile responsive as this also is a ranking factor. Most Internet user uses their mobile to access it.

  • No Consistency in Publishing: There is a saying that whoever "fails to plan, plans to fail," this also affect website owners. You must be consistent in publishing articles on your website. If you plan to publish an article or more per day or week or month, endeavor to follow up on that plan. Consistency has SEO value and drives traffic to the website. Being consistent updates your users and makes Google visit you regularly.
  • You are not using Internal Linking: Lots of website owners think internal linking is a waste of time or they are just being lazy. Internal linking has lots of benefits such as;
  • Helping search engine discover more pages from your site.
  • Reduces bounce rates as user remain glued to your site as they find out more about the subject through it.
  • It helps increase trust and Search engine sees such links as important.
However, as you do it, don't make it too much.

  • Not submitting your Website to Search Engines Webmaster: After designing and making your website active, you refuse to submit it  ‎to Webmaster. This is like driving while being blindfolded. You want to rank on SERP and you aren't telling the search engine that you actually exists. There are many gains that come with submitting your website on webmaster which includes ranking on SERP.

  •  Avoiding Analytics: Every marketer wants to see how their products are performing in the market, so also do website owners. Analytics from Google and other search engines provide data that gives insight into how your website is performing ‎so as to help you improve in any way where you are lacking. Google analytically is free and thus there is no money excuse for Internet marketers or else they are just being lazy.
  • Not linking your Website to Social media: Social Media helps a lot in SERP ranking and thus ‎you need to be active at least with one of the social media platforms. Social Media is a good SEO tool according to experts and that not all it helps drive traffic to your site.
  •  Stopped learning: SEO, as I mentioned in the beginning changes from time to time, just because you've gotten good with Today's SEO, doesn't mean you should relax. Follow up with the latest update about new rules search engines are providing for SERP so as you won't be left behind. SEO requires you to follow up with its latest news and trends.
With these several mistakes highlighted above if you know you've defaulted one of them, it not too late you can go back to your website to correct such errors.
